One fruit, every homeland

We took the one fruit the entire planet agrees on, gave it a stage, and invited the whole world to cook.

Two days, one fruit, and roughly a dozen vendors throwing down at once at Gleisdreieck. Half the world has a mango story — and this summer in Berlin, they're all telling it at once.

Sound systems thumping global beats and dancehall, dancers spinning between the food stalls, the U-Bahn rattling overhead and the best sunset in the city setting it all on fire. This is Berlin doing what Berlin does best: every corner of the world, shoulder to shoulder, on one patch of grass.

One festival, one simple rule: every kitchen brings a mango dish. So you'll travel from Mexico to Thailand to the Caribbean to West Africa to South Asia and back — no flights, no borders, just a paper plate and an appetite.

Meet the mangoes

One fruit. Six varieties. The world on a plate.

The mango is grown across more than 100 countries — and almost every cuisine at the festival has its own favourite. Here are the cultivars that shaped them, paired with the stall that does each one justice.

Maharashtra, India

Alphonso

Honeyed · saffron · floral

The 'king of mangoes' — silky, fibreless flesh and an intense sun-warmed perfume.

Where to taste itIndian stall — try the aam ras puri or mango kulfi.

Chiapas, Mexico

Ataúlfo

Buttery · citrus · sweet-sharp

Small, golden, almost custard-like. Eaten with chili and lime, it sings.

Where to taste itMexican stall — mango habanero salsa is built for this.

Central Thailand

Nam Dok Mai

Fragrant · clean · perfumed

Long, elegant fruit with the bright tropical aroma Thai desserts are famous for.

Where to taste itThai stall — sticky rice with mango is the obvious pull.

Philippines

Carabao

Velvet · honey · golden

The national fruit of the Philippines — once Guinness-listed as the world's sweetest.

Where to taste itFilipino stall — make a beeline for the halo-halo.

Caribbean

Julie

Tangy · spicy · juicy

Compact and complex — beloved across the islands, mash it into salsa or chutney.

Where to taste itCaribbean stall — jerk chicken with mango chutney on the side.

Florida → global

Keitt

Mild · juicy · late-season

The familiar green-shouldered, long-season fruit you'll find on most European shelves.

Where to taste itMango Bar — the workhorse for lassi, margaritas and coolers.

Availability varies — mango cultivars are seasonal. We'll have what the vendors and the season give us.

The food lineup was wild. Different cuisines on every corner, a proper mango lassi shake, German friends going for seconds. Pay-as-you-go made it easy.

Took the kids and they had a blast. The family zone is real — face paint, sandbox, the works. Already pencilled in for next year.

I've been to every Wedesi event since the first Holi. It feels more like a community gathering than a festival. Very well organised, very Berlin.
